Race report by CJ Jelin
This past weekend I went down to Banning, California to race the 2018 SoCal Shootout at Pro-line Raceway. There were 189 entries for the three day race and the track was a fun layout. The track had a sand section and had a option lane with a metal jump on the inside or go to the outside without a jump.

My XT8’18, XB8’18, and XB8E’18 were all hooked up on Pro-Line tires. Practice was Friday and the track was really new. This made all the cars loose until later in the day. The more cars that ran on the track the better the grip was getting. The sand was starting to get harder after the track crew made them rough. I finished the first day feeling good going into qualifying.

Saturday, there were going to be three ten minute heads up races and the time is what really count because at the end they would add all three of your timed runs to put you into a main. There were ping pong balls in a bucket that had numbers on it. Before every qualifying race you would pick a ball and that is were you would start. If you picked the number 1 ball you would start first on the track but go up to the driver stand last, or if you had the last number you would start last and go up on the driver stand first. I was the 2nd race of the day in open truggy and there were 12 people in my race. So I was the first person to get a ball for my race and I pick number 12. I was able to get my spot but I started last, I knew if I was smart and missed the big pile ups I would make my way to the top fast. I had done that and I was in the lead on the first lap. I then went on the win the race. Next up was pro nitro buggy, I again had a start in the back. I drove like I did in truggy at the start and was battling for first in a couple laps. I then was in first and was pulling away, then I went for a jump I shouldn’t have and broke my car. Next was open ebuggy to get the rounds done they changed the ebuggy runs to 8 minutes. After getting my ping ball I had a middle start. I was battling with Dylan Nelson for most of the race then he made a mistake and went on to take the win.

The 2nd round of qualifying the track was getting really dry. I again had drew a back of the pack start. I again then kept my cool at the start and was making my to the front by missing the pile ups. I was leading by the 2nd lap and then my truck died. I was back out and running I was in 11th and made my way to 7th by the end of the race. The 2nd round of pro nitro buggy I had a back of the pack start. I was in 8th on the first lap and I knew that Austin Pannone was getting a bigger lead the more I was staying back. I started to make more passes and by the 5th lap I was in 2nd and battling with Austin Pannone. Three laps later Austin had a mistake and that let me get by him. I then lead the race from that point on to take the win. The 2nd round of open ebuggy I had a good start and was in the lead to take the win.

The third round of truggy I again had drew a back of the pack start. I again then kept my cool at the start and was making my to the front by missing the pile ups. I was battling with Tyler Brown for 6 laps then he crashed. I went on to win the race by 6 seconds. The third round of pro nitro buggy, I had middle of the pack start. I was pushing to hard to catch up to 1st and was crashing. This put me 2nd in the race were I finished. The last race for me was open ebuggy and I had a good start run to take the win with no mistakes. After everything I was 7th in the b main for pro nitro buggy, tq in truggy, and ebuggy. I used Proline m3 holeshots in the first and third round on all my cars. I used x3 holeshots on all my cars in the second round. Sunday was main day and the track was getting really rough. The pro buggy b main, I had started 7th due to breaking in one of the qualifiers. I had some work to due. I started running clean laps, taking my time to make it to the front. By the 10th lap I was in the lead after battling with Aj Schumacher for 5 laps.

I won the b main and the bump into the Amain starting 11th. The ebuggy a main I had went wide in a turn at the start and Anthony Westergard had went into first. I then put pressure on him and he crashed and I went back into first. I then went on to get a 10 second lead to win open ebuggy. Next up was the open nitro truggy I started first. In warm my truggy felt really good so I was ready for the main.

The main was really good I lead it tone to tone with no mistakes. The last race of the day was the pro nitro buggy a main. I was starting in 11th so I knew that if I had too many mistakes I would not get up to the top. At the start I had taken it easy and didn’t get caught in the pile ups. The first lap I was in the top 5 and kept passing people. When Colin Herzig pit I passed him and he came back out right behind me. I drove clean fast laps without crashing and Colin crashed. This gave me a lead that when I came and pit I was still ahead of him.

I went on to lead the race from that point on to take the win. I ran X3 buckshot on my truggy, ebuggy, and X3 Holshots my nitro buggy for the mains. I would like to say a amazing race put on by Daniel Adams, Eddie Laret, and Victor Guerrero the racing format was different but fun and the layout was a good one can’t wait for next year. I would like to thank Kevin Palmer,Shawn Beasley for all there help this weekend and my family at home for the support.
